Preschool Prep Takes Flight!

Fall Fun in Preschool Prep!

Fall in Full Swing!
We are learning about leaves and seeds! We worked together to make the leaves go up and down on the parachute and to collect them once they fell. We then enjoyed an activity of making Sunflowers using coffee filters and paint. We worked on fine motor muscle skills when we dropped the paint onto the filters. We introduced the concept of diffusion! We’re experimenting with different tastes too! For snack this week we are tasting leaf shaped wheat bread with pumpkin butter and apricots, yumm! Fall is in Full Swing!!!!

Preschool Prep Fall Session!
This Fall has been busy! In September we studied about Apples, the colors Red, Yellow and Green. We also learned about our community including our Preschool Prep community. We even made a Friendship Salad and had Red Pajama day! We also learned to sort buttons by color and size, while working on our fine motor skills as we decorated frames for our class pictures.

Social Skills Group Puzzle Making!

One morning
One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections. The bedding was hardly able to cover it and seemed ready to slide off any moment. His many legs, pitifully thin compared with the size of the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked. “What’s happened to me?” he thought. It wasn’t a dream. His room, a proper human room although a little too small, lay peacefully between its four familiar walls. A collection of textile samples lay spread out on the table – Samsa was a travelling salesman – and above it there hung a picture that he had recently cut out of an illustrated magazine and housed in a nice, gilded frame. It showed a lady fitted out with a fur hat and fur boa who sat upright, raising a heavy fur muff that covered the whole of her lower arm towards the viewer. Gregor then turned to look out the window at the dull weather.

Far far away
Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth. Even the all-powerful Pointing has no control about the blind texts it is an almost unorthographic life One day however a small line of blind text by the name of Lorem Ipsum decided to leave for the far World of Grammar. The Big Oxmox advised her not to do so, because there were thousands of bad Commas, wild Question Marks and devious Semikoli, but the Little Blind Text didn’t listen. She packed her seven versalia, put her initial into the belt and made herself on the way. When she reached the first hills of the Italic Mountains, she had a last view back on the skyline of her hometown Bookmarksgrove, the headline of Alphabet Village and the subline of her own road, the Line Lane.

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving in Our Preschool Prep Program

Fall Season
Fall is actually here…
Although the warm temperatures in Los Angeles have yet to subside, the children at ECDA have been designing, painting and creating Fall elements to remind us all that Fall season is actually here…
Growing Pumpkins in Pumpkins:
For the last decade, the benefits of connecting to nature have been well documented in numerous scientific research studies and publications. Together, the research shows that children’s social, psychological, academic and physical health is positively impacted when they have daily contact with nature. With that in mind, the ECDA team strives to connect children with nature as often as possible.

Three Ways to Promote School Readiness When You Take Your Child to the Bank
Trips to the Bank
Like other errands, this mundane adult task is an extremely worthwhile lesson for children. Enhancing literary and math skills, going to the bank can be a fun activity for you and your child. Here are some ways you can use this trip to bond with and inform your child on important lessons:
1. If your child has their own piggy bank, show him/her how much change is worth once it is counted.
2. Have your child see and identify the differences between the shapes, sizes, and value of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
3. Show your child what $1 is worth once applied to spending.

Hooray for Grandparents!

Four Ways to Promote School Readiness When You Shop With Your Child at the Mall
Shopping at the Mall
Again, what may seem to be a standard task can really be a learning experience for you and your child. Not only will your child begin to learn about the necessary procedures for shopping, he/she will also feel a part of a larger community. Here are some ways you can use this trip to bond with and inform your child on important lessons:
1. Encourage your child to look for their needed size on the rack, reading different numbers and measurements
2. Teach your child important information to seek help if they get lost, such as parents’ full names, phone numbers, and addresses
3. Increase your child’s interest in errands by asking them where they would like to stop first on the to-do list
4. Have your child check off certain errands once completed, giving them a sense of accomplishment in completing tasks.

Eight Ways to Promote School Readiness When Cooking With Your Child
Cooking
Cooking, another daily task for your family that can be a valuable opportunity for educating your child. Although the kitchen is potentially a dangerous place for younger children, it is also an environment that fosters motor and academic skills.
Here are some ways you can use this task to bond with and inform your child on important lessons:
1. Have your child assign lids to various sizes of pots and pans, allowing them to discover the right fit.
2. Give your child a wooden spoon to play “the drums” on pots and pans, adding some fun into the cooking experience.
3. Use cookie cutters to teach your child shapes and object names.
4. Ask your child to take out a certain number of eggs from the carton and count with them as they go.
5. Engage in one-to-one correspondence in counting by having your child pour a certain number of tablespoons into the mixing bowl.
6. Have your child roll out dough and experience the different shapes that can be made.
7. Compare more to less by having your child hold one cup of sugar and one pound of sugar and tell you which is heavier.
8. Expand your child’s vocabulary with cooking words such as “mixer” or “blender”, stating each one aloud when it comes to use.

Ten Ways to Promote School Readiness While Shopping with Your Child at the Supermarket
Going to the Grocery Store
A routine trip to the grocery store can actually be an occasion to expose your child to many wonders of your community and world. Incorporating the five senses as well as educating your children on nutrition and finance turns a seemingly ordinary experience into a meaningful learning opportunity!
Here are some ways you can use this trip to bond with and inform your child on important lessons:
1. Teach your child how to read nutrition labels for specific allergies.
2. Have your child unpack the food at home, categorizing different types of food (such as fruits and vegetables).
3. Show your child how to solve the price of certain foods by weight.
4. Give your child a small sum of money to pick out one treat for themselves that they will purchase with the allotted amount.
5. Show your child coupons and have them search for the matching item.
6. Pay in cash and let your child count the change.
7. Discuss what makes certain foods healthy (i.e. vitamins, protein) and others unhealthy (i.e. sugars, unnatural ingredients).
8. Talk to your child about how certain vegetables grow in the ground.
9. Allow your child to taste multiple foods in the different food groups and pick what they would like for their meal.
10. At dinners, tell family members how your child helped to plan the meal, giving them a sense of self-worth in the family’s daily operations.
